How This Blog Helped Our Readers

Readers share how the articles on this site changed how they approached hair loss treatment

"I was about to drop $2,800 on a 'stem cell hair therapy' package a clinic near me was selling, then found this blog's product review section. Their article on unproven treatments broke down exactly why that specific therapy has zero double-blind data behind it. Saved me thousands and stopped me from wasting six months on nonsense. I'm now on a proper finasteride + minoxidil protocol and actually seeing regrowth for the first time in years."

"The male pattern baldness science article on this site was genuinely the first thing that made me actually understand what was happening to my hair. I'd spent years reading Reddit bro-science and influencer product shills, and none of it explained anything clearly. Two weeks after reading it I had a proper dermatologist appointment booked and a real treatment plan instead of just guessing. I love that the blog never once pushed me toward a transplant - it actually helped me pick non-surgical options first because that's what my stage actually needs."

Oluwaseun Adeyemi

"I was three days away from booking a hair transplant at a budget Turkish clinic someone recommended on a forum. Then I read the technology comparison articles here and realized I wasn't even asking the right questions about technician involvement vs surgeon, punch sizes, ex-vivo graft time. I cancelled that deposit, spent two more months researching properly using the Barley blog as my checklist, and eventually booked somewhere that actually answered all my questions properly. The results 11 months later are night and day better than what my forum friend got at the cheap place."

About This Blog

Common questions about the Barley Hair Science Blog editorial process

Are the articles on this blog actually reviewed by qualified medical doctors
Yes. Every single article published on this blog goes through a formal medical review process before publication, performed by at least one board-certified surgeon on our team who specializes in the topic being discussed. You can see which specific doctor reviewed each article listed below the article title. Our team includes MDs, PhDs in trichology research, and surgeons with 10,000+ procedure hours each. We do not publish content written by freelance marketers or AI chatbots without full surgeon fact-checking and sign-off.
Can I subscribe to get notified when new articles are published
Yes, absolutely. We publish two new articles every week - usually every Tuesday morning and Friday afternoon Beijing time. You can subscribe using the newsletter signup box in the sidebar on the right of this page. Our newsletter subscribers also receive exclusive content that never gets published publicly, including our quarterly "evidence update" summaries of new hair restoration research that came out in the last three months, plus occasional patient-only special offers. We never share your email with third parties, and you can unsubscribe in one click at any time with no hard feelings.
Do you accept guest articles, patient stories, or external blog post submissions
We selectively accept two types of submissions. First: real patient story submissions from actual patients anywhere in the world - we do not require you to have been treated at Barley. These are anonymized on request and compensated with a $200 honorarium if published, plus a free year of our premium aftercare resources. Second: research review submissions from qualified trichologists, dermatologists, or plastic surgeons outside our network - these go through a stricter editorial review. We do not accept SEO link-building guest posts, clinic marketing submissions, or articles written solely to promote an external product or service. Send pitches through our contact form marked "Blog Submission."
Where do the claims and studies referenced in your articles actually come from
We reference three types of sources and always distinguish between them clearly in the article. First: peer-reviewed PubMed-indexed scientific publications from journals like the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, Dermatologic Surgery, and the International Journal of Trichology. Second: our own internal de-identified clinical patient database with 100,000+ procedures and 12-month follow-up data. Third: independent third-party audits conducted by outside medical research firms, typically published every 2-3 years. Wherever possible we link out directly to the PubMed abstract so readers can review the study methodology themselves rather than taking our word for it.
How often is new content published and how often are old articles updated
New content: two brand new articles per week, every week of the year, except for one week of closure during Chinese Lunar New Year. That's roughly 100 new articles per year. Existing article updates: every article on this site has a "last medically reviewed" date at the bottom. We perform formal update reviews on our high-priority guide articles at minimum once every 12 months, or sooner if a major new study comes out that materially changes the current evidence or consensus. Technology comparison pages get reviewed quarterly because the device landscape moves fast. You can always see the exact review date at the bottom of every published article.

About This Blog's Editorial Philosophy

The Barley Hair Science Blog exists for one simple reason: most hair loss information online is either dangerously wrong or secretly trying to sell you something. We built this resource because we got tired of watching patients waste years of their time and tens of thousands of dollars on clinics that lie about results, products that do nothing, and influencers who have never read a single dermatology study.

We write honestly about what works, what might work, and what absolutely does not work. Sometimes that means telling readers they don't need a transplant at all and should try medications first. Sometimes that means criticizing marketing claims made by other clinics - including clinics we compete with commercially. Sometimes that means telling readers their specific case is borderline and surgery might not give them the result they want.

We will never recommend a treatment, technology, or product on this blog that our own surgeons would not personally use on themselves or their own family members. Full transparency, always.
